Description: YMCA Camp Piomingo is American Camp Association accredited and is located just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. Specifically, we are nestled in the middle of a beautiful 3600 acre wilderness, called Otter Creek Park. We are a coed resident camp with a staff/camper ratio of 1:4. All of our staff are highly trained with First Aid, CPR, and Life Guarding certifications. Camp Piomingo offers a variety of programs in order to accomodate a wide range of ages and interests. Our camp consists of a traditional program, an adventure program, and an equestrian program. Our camp is broken down into four units depending on the program and age of the campers. Typically, there are 6-8 campers per cabin, with two counselors in each cabin. The traditional Pioneer program is a one week session offered to campers 7-13. Our traditional Explorer program is offered to campers 10-13 and is a two week session. During this time, these campers will have their choice of clinics such as, swimming, pottery, drama, rock climbing, canoeing, jewelry making, the camp newspaper Mess Hall Press, horseback riding and archery. The campers also have an overnight, a cook out, learn basic outdoor skills, and will be surrounded by nature at all times. Campers are supervised by staff at all times. Our adventure program is seperated into two sections. Our Camp Crafter program for those 13-15, offers activities such as back packing, high ropes courses, mountain biking, caving, rock climbing and rapelling while staying at camp. Our Trail Blazer program is offered to those 14-16. Campers have the choice of participating in different off-camp trip sessions. For example, one session may rock climb in Red River Gorge, while another session consists of sea-kayaking in Wisconsin. All adventure programs are two week sessions. Our equestrian program gives the camper the unique opportunity to learn how to care for their own horse. This includes, cleaning the stall, tacking, and riding lessons. Camp Piomingo owns 24 horses and each camper is given his/her own horse to care for during their stay at camp. There is a one week session for beginner equestrian campers 9-11 and a two week session for those 11-16. Finally, Camp Piomingo also offers a unique program called Frontiers. This is a program designed for beginner campers between 6-8. It is a two night/three day stay at camp that allows the camper to get their feet wet at camp, without the potential homesickness of a whole week away. It is a great way to introduce your future camper to all the fun activities at Camp Piomingo. Frontiers also participate in many of the same traditional activities, but stay with their cabin group and counselor during their stay at Piomingo. In addition to the program-specific activities, all campers will be involved with all-camp evening activities and traditions such as cheering in the mess hall and Final Campfire. These ceremonies and our talented, creative staff are truly what make Camp Piomingo a unique and magical experience for every camper. As a branch of the YMCA of Greater Louisville, we espose the Judeo-Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. We are a not-for-profit organization committed to diversity and do not discriminate based on religion, creed, gender, or race. The mission of the Y is "to put Christian principles into practice through programs that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all." | ||
