Description: Theatre Arts Camp Junior, NIU Jazz Camp, Visual Arts Experience, Theatre Arts Camp Senior, and Brass Boot Camp bring like-minded junior and senior high school students together for a memorable hands-on arts experience. These intensive camps are for students who take their art seriously and who like to have fun. Camp staff are NIU faculty, students, and alumni. Campers stay in residence halls on campus, eat in university dining halls, and enjoy recreational activities on campus. These popular camps attract a loyal following, with about one third returning to camp the following year. Jazz, theatre, and visual art campers are invited to learn about other art forms during the Multi-Arts Festival during the week of the high school camps. NIU Jazz Camp (grades * 8-12): Jazz campers audition on the first day and are assigned to combos, big bands, or the percussion ensemble. Campers spend the week in rehearsals, seminars, masterclasses, and optional private lessons developing and improving skills in jazz performance, theory and improvisation. Final day camper performance! Visual Arts Experience (grades 8-12): Art campers enjoy two daily in-depth studio sessions in drawing, painting, and 3-D art, working on innovative projects with new materials, techniques, and ideas. Camp includes daily presentations by nationally known artists, as well as advice on careers and portfolios. NIU art alumna and art teacher Lynn Stockton directs the camp. Final day camper art exhibition! Theatre Arts Camp Senior (grades 9-12) Theatre Arts Camp Junior (grades 6-8): Theatre campers perform or crew in the all-camp production and develop specialized skills though individual coaching, group activities, and small classes and labs.
